Injury at Work - Two broken legs
John S, 41, was unloading timber at the yard where he worked.
Part of the job involved stacking sheets of plywood on a rack
30 feet off the ground. Unfortunately, whilst moving a sheet into
place he lost his balance, fell backwards and down into the back
of the truck he was unloading.
He broke both his legs and, after six weeks in hospital and six
months recuperation at home, ended up with one leg 2cm shorter
than the other - enough to give him a noticeable limp. This made
it difficult for him to climb ladders or to move quickly.
John kept his job, although he was not able to return to work
for over a year after the accident and his ability to do his job
was seriously impaired.
His employers’ insurers agreed to pay him general damages
of £20,000 for his pain, suffering and loss of mobility
and special damages of £12,000 to cover his loss of earnings
during his time off.
