Injured as a pedestrian - Six weeks in plaster
Kate A, a 27 year old secretary, was crossing a busy road at the
corner. As she stepped out a car turned into the road she was
crossing and knocked into her, catching her right leg and making
her fall to the ground. X-rays and examinations confirmed that
she had ruptured her cruciate ligament, which lies on the inside
of the knee joint. Kate spent six weeks in plaster from ankle
to hip and many months in physiotherapy. Her leg is still unstable
- she can walk, but her leg collapses under her if she put her
full weight on it.
As her job mostly involved sitting down her ability to do it
was not impaired, but everyday activities such as shopping, ironing
and housework were harder for her.
The driver admitted liability and his insurers paid general damages
of £16,000 for the injury and loss of mobility and special
damages of £10,000 to cover her time off work and the physiotherapy
sessions.
